C Windows Winsxs Temp Pendingdeletes Folder

Winsxs Temp Folder

How-To Geek Forums / Windows 7

Is it safe to delete the folder Windows Installer and the $PatchCache$ folder?

Both, the PendingDeletes and the PendingRenames folder within the windows temp folder are about 1GB in size. Is there any save way to empty or delete those folders? C: Windows WinSxS >10GB C: Windows WinSxS Temp PendingDeletes 800MB C: Windows WinSxS Temp PendingRenames 210MB. I have no pending installation. It seems to me that both computer don't do any problems, but today I found some files under the ' Windows winsxs Temp PendingDeletes' and ' Windows winsxs Temp PendingRename' Folder. I know that the Update service uses this folder and during reboot the files should be performed and deleted.

Its taking too much space on my Windows 7 Laptop.

I'd say NO... you could run into problems later.

Winsxs Pending Deletes

I had a program cause some damage by deleting some of those files, it actually was a faulty disk cleaner I believe, not a virus. Some of those files 'appear' to be 'orphaned', but they are not. I guess it took out a few, and I wound up not being able to update Norton's Ghost. I had to RE-INSTALL Ghost to fix it. This is the Installer folder, but you may be able to delete the PatchCache?

Me, I'd LEAVE both...

As a 'reference' on my W7 machine, Installer is 3.8GB's, has 369 sub-folders and 2,304 files...

@Irv,

Are you speaking about C: Windows Winsxs Temp PendingDeletes folder items ??

Rick P.

@Irv,

Never mind. (LOL)

I see what OP is talking about now.

My Installer folder is 604 MB.

$PatchCache$ folder is 230 MB.

yakuzaazl, Suggest you leave the Installer Folder Alone !

C Windows Winsxs Temp Pendingdeletes Folder Missing

I have no pending installation. My operating system is Windows8.1 Is there any way to cleanup the WinSxS folder as a whole? I already used the clean-up utility when right clicking the disk. But did not change much!

Thanks in advance

The safe way to clean up WinSxS is with Windows' Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM). Running the following in an elevated CMD prompt should theoretically remove some of the excess baggage:

DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

However, for that task to complete, TrustedInstaller must be running, which is not set up in Windows 8 by default. To run TrustedInstaller, you may need to first enable TelnetServer, then enter

net start TrustedInstaller

After DISM runs successfully (on my PC, I found that DISM worked only when Windows was started in Safe Mode), you may want to disableTelnetServer and stop TrustedInstaller.

After all this folderol, you may find only a modest reduction in the size of WinSxS. In my case, it was reduced from ~10 GB to ~7 GB. sigh.
