Of the 1973 movie 'L'ultima neve di Primavera' (The last snow of spring) celebrating its 40th anniversary this 2013. It is a precious melody that holds the spirit of a naive yet amazingly sweet and penetrating melody. It grows into several climaxes, all non pretentious yet full of.

Oh gosh, there's sentimental - and then there's this. I wonder whether this film led to a sudden spate of Italian fathers spending more time with their sons. By the way, John Holmstrom (he of 'The Moving Picture Boy') really hates this film. He calls the tale 'lamentable', refers to the tale's originator Mario Gariazzo as a 'marshmellow-pedler' and calls the follow-up 'Il venditore di palloncini' (which had a near identical plot) 'a monument to the corrupt sentiments of our age'! ('The Moving Picture Boy', pp. 343-344). Myself - I rather liked this film, though only because Renato Cestiè suffers so very beautifully!
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10A classic Italian tearjerker like Incompreso. The basic plot is quite similar: motherless boy longs for more attention from his preoccupied father but is heartbreakingly determined to be a good sport about it; father only comes round when it's too late. This film lacks some of Incompreso's psychological depth and subtlety but makes up for that in warmth and sweetness. Yes, we are being manipulated, but manipulated so well that we enjoy every minute of it and weep at the end. The presence of the talented Renato Cestiè as the lead certainly doesn't hurt.
